Eating Vegetables Without the Starch

Eating Vegetables Without the Starch

Vegetables are the perfect side for every meal! Everything from the creaminess of mash potatoes and hot steaming rice can perfectly compliment a dish. However, foods like these contain an abundance of starches and are very high-calorie. Therefore, you get all the deliciousness without any of the health benefits you intended to have with your meal.Luckily, there are a wide variety of health alternatives to your favorite side-dishes and meals. They provide a delightful taste while also being low in calories and carbs.

Finding Substitutes

When you plan on making a meal with grain, try to use whole grain. Whole grains, like barley or quinoa, are a very strong source of minerals, fiber, and vitamins. You can also cut your portion in half to ensure a lower calorie meal or cook the grains along with vegetables. There are even recipes that use vegetables as a substitute for grains, filled with carbs and other starchy vegetables.

You can use cauliflower, which has the same consistency of a starchy vegetable without the starch, as a substitute. It can be mashed or whippedjust like potatoes, and even be used as a pizza crust. Additionally, you can even use squash as a pasta substitute. Squash can be used to make squash spaghetti with a bit of tomato sauce. You can even use squash as an alternative for mac & cheese by grating it and baking it with some low-fat cheese. Squash can also be used to substitute sweet potatoes around the winter holidays. So you get a great source of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber without the extra calories or starch.

These are just a few examples of some vegetables you can use as substitute to your favorite sources of starch. You no longer have to suffer the consequences of starch-filled vegetables in your favorite dishes. Once you replace vegetables that had starch with vegetables with lower levels of starch, you will feel the difference. The lower levels of starch and calories will help you lose weight. The vegetable substitutes are also a strong source of vitamins and minerals, meaning that your body will feel more energized.
