CBD Treatment

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative movement disorder, which means that it will get progressively worse over time. There is no known cause of the disease, but it involves the death or malfunction of cells within the brain. Many of the neurons which are destroyed are responsible for the production of dopamine, a chemical responsible for many functions in the body, including mood regulation and movement. As more neurons die, sufferers may lose more control over their body’s movements.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease can include:

  • Tremor in the hands
  • Rigidity (or the inability to move correctly)
  • Stiff joints
  • Instability in posture

There is no cure for Parkinson’s Disease, but there are medications which may help slow down the rate at which symptoms worsen.

The Use of CBD Oil for Parkinson’s Disease

Studies on the use of cannabinoids for PD are limited, but the preclinical trials which have been conducted thus far are promising. Because the methods by which Parkinson’s begins are only just beginning to be understood, the exact effect CBD may have on them are not yet known. It is known that the neurological PD symptoms usually begin when 80% of more of the brain’s dopamine producing receptors have been damaged, and that CBD oil may interact with these receptors. More current research also suggests that Parkinson’s may be a multi-system disease, beginning in the intestinal tract where inflammation and an imbalanced microbiome may play roles in the formation of disease.

Preliminary studies have shown that patients who were given up to 350 mg of CBD oil per day noted a higher quality of life, fewer psychotic symptoms, and improved sleep.

Since CBD oil may have other health benefits, such as a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, and since it’s usually tolerated well, you may wish to try it for yourself to see if it’s right for your condition.
