New Evidence to Treat Depression with CBD

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 19 million Americans experience depression or are living with depression.
Depression is more than just feeling sad or having a low at times. It's more serious than that as it's not a transient experience, but one that is intense and lasts for long periods of time. Sometimes depression doesn't have any concrete reason- a feeling of hopelessness and helplessness overcomes you and affects your physical and mental health.
Those suffering from depression may suffer a loss of appetite, insomnia, experience intense fatigue, cease to enjoy life and some extreme cases often harbor suicidal thoughts. If you experience these for long periods of time, it's advisable to seek professional help. Counseling and medication can help, but if you're looking for a safe and natural way to treat depression, then you can go the CBD way.
Cannabidiol, or CBD is a compound of the Cannabis Sativa plant just like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is. The difference however lies in the effects they produce. While THC is psychoactive and produces a 'high', CBD is non-psychoactive and has been shown to be effective in protecting neurons and helping people relax. It is being used currently to treat certain mental and autoimmune conditions. CBD is also being used to treat depression and the results appear to be satisfactory.
A recent study by Raquel Linge showed that when the olfactory bulb was removed in mice- this involves removal of a small section of the brain- they experienced symptoms that were akin to human depression.
Usually anti-depressant drugs are tested on animals before being tested on human beings. These mice were given liquid CBD and within 30 minutes, they became more active, their heart beats stabilized, and most significantly they began to take an interest in sugar. This was impressive as the mice had lost interest in sugar after surgery.
Continued administrations of CBD showed a marked increase in serotonin levels- serotonin is the 'good feel chemical' that induces happiness and elevates moods. Depressed individuals lack this chemical. It was also found that glutamate levels also increased and healthy brain function was restored. CBD appears to have the same effect on humans.
It's important to note that depression is a disorder of the brain and many factors can be responsible for it. Teens, young adults and women are affected though it is not restricted to them. It's vital that those suffering from depression get professional help as soon as possible.
