CBD Use for Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive one. Statistics say that it affects around one million people in the United States itself. The causes are, however, unknown. What is known is that vital nerve cell death in the brain, that is associated with dopamine, leads to the disease. Due to the death of vital cells, it leads to loss of control over movements and causes aggressive tremors. The present mode of treatment being used is a long term course of heavy pharmaceuticals. They help in the improvement of patients, but are hazardous on a long term basis because of the fact that they cause side effects. Due to this reason, many patients are on the lookout for a more safer and natural alternative. Hence, we are learning about CBD to use in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

WHAT IS CBD

CBD also known as cannabidiol, is a compound produced by the Cannabis Sativa plant. It does not contain THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. This makes it legal and fit for consumption. It shows a neurogenic and neuroprotective effect on animals and humans. It also shows anxiolytic properties and is therefore used in the treatment of mental and autoimmune disorders. Recent studies funded by federal research also shows that it has properties that can help in cancer treatment.

RESEARCH:

By a study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, the use of CBD to treat Parkinson’s was evaluated carefully. 42 patients were subjected to the tests. It was conducted as a double blind study, which means that 21 patients received CBD while the other half were given a placebo. Neither group was aware of what they were receiving. CBD was given to the group at 300mgs per day, for 8 weeks. While the placebo group reported no changes, the CBD group reported positive effects. They were able to function better during the day. The tremors, though present, were reduced by around half. They were in better spirits and had the desire to do things that the disease held them back from.
