CBD: The History of Anxiety Treatments

Anxiety is one of the most prevalent cases of psychological illness affecting the US population. In fact, about 40 million US adults are dealing with anxiety disorder.
Everyone can feel anxious from time to time. It is an important part of human evolution. It is man’s natural reaction when subject to threats and unsafe environment or situation, also called as human’s fight or flight mechanism.
Simply put, anxiety is natural and part of being human. But when the feelings become out of control and an individual is taken over by anxiety, that is when a real problem occurs.
For many years anxiety is not seen as a real or serious mental illness. It was not until the 1980’s when anxiety disorders begun to be recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. Here, we are going to walk back down the memory lane and take a look back at the important timelines highlighting the history of the treatments for anxiety disorder:
The ANCIENT GRACE ERA
Did you know that the word hysteria is a Greek word for uterus? The Greeks believe that hysteria only affects the women. In fact, they believed that the uterus is responsible for behavioral problems like hysteria and panic. In addition, they also believed that the semen of the female who lack sexual intercourse can make women behave strangely such that when a woman’s semen is stored for too long in their body it can turn into poison. And with this, sex is deemed to be the natural remedy.
EARLY RENAISSANCE ERA
During the renaissance period, women who tend to exhibit “hysterical” behavior are believed to be witches. In Spain, those who show symptoms of hysteria and other behaviors that are deemed strange and unexplainable are supposedly treated by subjecting the person to torture, while in Britain they resort to execution and in Scotland they practice burning at the stake.
VICTORIAN ERA
During the Victorian era, women are typically confined only in the houses, trapped indoors without nothing to do, some women got involved with doing unusual things. These women who tend to show unusual behaviors specially those who become hysterical are believed to be crazy and were turned over into asylums. Inside the asylum, they were given treatments which include electroshock therapy and lobotomization.
THE ERA OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
The soldiers who have returned from the American Civil War were believed to have been suffering from what they called as irritable heart syndrome. This is because the soldiers were having shortness of breathing and heart palpitations. At this point, they were treated with opium and some turn to ethyl alcohol and bromide salts. During this era, opium’s addictive property is not yet fully understood. Although this era has become an important piece of history such that for the first time it has been recognized that men can suffer from anxiety too.
The Early 20th Century
Russians were the first to seemingly acknowledge the psychological nature of anxiety. They sent psychiatrists off to war along with their soldiers. During this time, anxiety is treated through sedation using barbiturates. It was in this era too that people believed that anxiety can be passed on to off-springs, as such sterilization is commonly done in an attempt to stop anxiety from getting transferred to children.
The Late 20th Century
It was after 1950’s that more studies were conducted to understand anxiety more. During this period, fear exposure method was developed. Finally, in 1980’s the term anxiety disorder was established. And, in the 1990’s antidepressants came to light as treatment for anxiety patient.
