Cannabidiol as an Epilepsy Treatment for Children
Epilepsy is a terrible disease that affects the central nervous system. In simple words, the impulses or signals from the brain malfunction. This causes miscommunication between the cells involved. What ultimately happens is a fit of seizure. The most common mode used to treat this disease is the frequent and high dosage of pharmaceuticals. As a result, the person feels drowsy and zombie like, which is no longer who they really are. This interferes with their daily activities such as social and communication skills.
In this documentary, a young girl who used to suffer multiple seizures on a daily basis, was prescribed to take heavy sedatives daily or get into a medically induced coma. These options than hampered the child’s future. Due to this, more people are looking for a more natural treatment for solving this problem. Studies have shown that CBD is the most promising treatment which is a natural and safe cure for the treatment.

CBD is a non-psychotomimetic compound obtained from the Cannabis sativa plant. It is similar to cannabis but does not contain THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. Hence, it is deemed legal and fit for consumption in all the 50 states. Cannabidiol shows neurogenic and neuroprotective properties on humans and animals. It also shows anxiolytic effect, the reason why it is being used to treat anxiety, mental and autoimmune disorders. CBD is also being considered to use as an anti-cancer drug. CBD gives similar positive effects as cannabis without the “high” that THC causes.

In studies funded by federal research, 19 parents, whose children were between 2 to 16 years of age, used liquid CBD drops for 4 months. These children had not shown any response to epilepsy treatment before. Also, the cause, frequency and the seizure type varied in each child. The group under consideration had 2 to 250 seizures per day. After 4 months of using CBD oil, the statistics and data were collected. The judges were the institutional board of The Stanford University.
The results left everyone stunned! 16 out of the 19 parents who participated, reported a decrease in the frequency of the seizures that their child got. And, in addition, 2 of the parents reported that their children were seizure free. Of 14 parents, 8 reported a decrease of 80% in seizure frequency while 3 parents declared a 50% decrease. Another 3 parents reported a 25% decrease. All the 16 parents who found this treatment successful, continued to treat their child with CBD.
