New Evidence To Treat Depression With CBD

New Evidence To Treat Depression With CBD

Everyone feels sad from time to time. However, what if it is more than just being sad? What if that feeling becomes overwhelming or constant? What if that feeling turns into hopelessness or helplessness, a loss for the appetite to live? That is depression. Depression takes on many forms, but according to the National Institute of Mental Health, it is estimated that about 19 million American adults are living with depression. However, a new study displays the evidence to prove there is a new, groundbreaking “cure” on our hands and it is a great, natural and safe way to treat depression with CBD. Before, we get into what CBD is and how to treat depression with CBD, a few of the most common symptoms of depression are:

  • Feelings of hopelessness/helplessness
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia/Increase in sleep
  • Increase/decrease in weight
  • loss of enjoyment in daily activities
  • Feelings of no purpose
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Thoughts of suicide

If you are unsure if you are struggling with depression, it is best to see a professional who can give you a proper diagnosis. However, if you are living with this debilitating disorder, CBD may be just the answer you are looking for.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a major non-psychotomimetic compound of the Cannabis Sativa  CBD; Treatmentplant. It provides many benefits similar to that of Cannabis, but contains no THC. Therefore, CBD is completely legal in all 50 states. CBD has been shown to carry neuroprotective and neurogenic effects as well as anxiolytic effects in humans and animals. CBD is currently being used to treat many mental and autoimmune disorders and the current use of CBD as a depression treatment has been shown to be extremely promising.

Research

In a study conducted by Raquel Linge, which can be read about more here, researchers were interested in how CBD affected the brain of 40 mice who underwent olfactory bulb removal surgery. This type of surgery removes a small section of the mouse’s brain. The removal of the olfactory bulb leads mice to experience symptoms almost identical to the human symptoms of depression and is one of the current ways to test any new, anti-depressant drug before human tests. After the surgery was performed in the mice, they were observed for a few days and began to display these depression-like symptoms.

All mice were administered liquid CBD and after only 30 minutes there symptoms began to subside. They became more productive, had a stable heartbeat, and their interest in sugar sparked. Sugar was a substance they no longer worked to get after surgery. Therefore, this was very impressive.

All mice had a subtle rise in serotonin levels after the first administration of CBD. However, after treatment persisted, their serotonin levels began to rise more noticeably and balance out. Serotonin is responsible for the “happy” emotion and elevation in mood. Most who struggle with depression are only lacking this essential chemical. Glutamate levels increased significantly after the initial dose and remained in good standings throughout the rest of the study. Glutamate is essential for healthy brain function and essential to combat depression.
